The vast majority of our population is overweight, at least a little. To determine ‘how overweight’ someone is, we commonly use a body mass index, or BMI. Anyone who has a BMI of over 39% is considered morbidly, or extremely, obese. Everyone knows that having excess body fat can cause a myriad of health problems, and the more overweight you are the more severe and frequent your health problems will be. But don’t give up, even extreme obese women can find the help they need to get their weight under control, once and for all.

Before you decide which type of weight loss plan is best for you, don’t overlook your emotions. Many people will ’emotionally eat’ or eat when they are upset or depressed. Recognizing your bad habits is the first step to changing them and adopting new, healthier, habits.

Here are some steps that can help you get back in shape:

1. The first step anyone who is obese needs to take is a trip to their doctor. You are far more susceptible to heart problems so you need to find out if you are healthy enough for exercise. Exercise and diet is the best way for anyone to lose weight. No, it’s not quick or easy, but it’s a lifestyle change that can help you keep the weight off permanently.

Start off easy by taking short walks. Other great ideas are non-impact activities such as swimming or biking. You will have to start slow and that is fine, but as long as your doctor says it’s ok, you need to start. Hiring a trainer to help you modify exercises for your specific limitations is another good idea (they can also help you stay motivated).

2. While not as highly recommended as step 1, medication can help some people who are extremely overweight. It’s still not a quick fix and the medications will need to be prescribed, and monitored, by your doctor; but using medications for a short time might be a good way to kick start your weight loss. It’s not recommended that you use these medications for extended periods of time due to the number of side effects, so if you decide to go this route think of it as only a temporary thing to get you started.

3. There are now some surgical remedies to obesity. Bariatric weight loss surgery has helped many morbidly obese patients lose all of their unwanted weight and by doing so has allowed many of them to completely reverse some negative health issues that they were dealing with. This surgery is expensive though and as with any surgery, there can be complications.

All in all, it’s best if you can make lifestyle changes with your diet and by adding exercise to your daily routine if you need to lose weight, but if you need extra help their are other things that you can do. The most important thing that extreme obese women need to remember is that it’s not so important which method you choose, just choose one and stick with it. You deserve a long, happy, healthy life, and only you can make that happen.

Green tea has been consumed by people for centuries, most likely dating back to prehistoric times. It was first cultivated in Asia and has more health benefits than black tea. However, both green tea and black tea come from the same plant. The only difference is that black tea is more heavily processed. As with other foods, each extra step of processing robs it of some health-giving benefits. So what are the benefits of green tea?

That’s a great question. First, let’s admit that even though the first people who used green tea didn’t have modern degrees in science, they were more in tune with their environment, and out of necessity, their bodies as well. They may not have understood why green tea worked, but they were able to easily see the results.

Now let’s take a quick step back into the present day. It turns out that modern scientists agree with the people of past centuries when it comes to the benefits of green tea. The only difference is that scientists have a better understanding if why green tea is so good for you. Tea contains flavonoids and polyphenols, catechin to be specific. This works as an antioxidant and has a positive impact on health. Here are some of the advantages of drinking green tea regularly.

1. Preventing heart disease. There is evidence that the compounds in green tea work to lower the absorption of cholesterol in the intestines. The thinking is that if the body takes in less cholesterol, then it can’t build up in the blood vessels. If that’s the case, then the risk of heart disease goes down.

2. Liver function. While modern medicine may not fully agree with the following, those who practice alternative medicine recommend drinking green tea to flush built-up toxins out of the liver. The liver works as the body’s main filter, and your health suffers when it gets backed up. Green tea may be the answer to this common problem.

3. Weight loss. Not only does green tea reduce the absorption of cholesterol, it does the same thing with fat. The more fat that passes through your system, the less there is to store. On top of that, compounds in green tea can lower the secretion of leptin. Leptin makes you feel like you’re still hungry, so keeping that under control will help you feel full sooner than you other wise would. The other aspect of green tea that aids in weight loss is that it can boost metabolism; burning off more calories even when you are at rest.

4. Cancer. Studies have shown a strong link between drinking green tea and a reduction in certain types of cancer. Just don’t drink it too hot as it could increase your odds of problems in the esophagus.

5. Diabetes. Another one of the benefits of green tea that researchers have found is that it can help regulate blood sugar levels.

Whatever it is that made our ancestors discover the benefits of green tea, it’s a good thing they did. It is a drink that not only tastes good, but it’s also good for you.

Everyone wants the tight ab look that we see on movie stars and athletes. When people think of how to get tight abs they almost always think of sit ups or crunches. That is only half of the equation though.

The truth is that no matter how strong your abdominal muscles are, if they’re covered by a layer of fat no one will see them. To get great abs you need to combine exercises that will tone your abdominal muscles as well as help you increase your heart rate and lose fat. If your are obese you will have added challenges, but there are some abdominal exercises for obese people that can help.

It’s important to keep in mind that your abdominal area consists of several different muscle groups. You have lower muscles, upper muscles, and oblique (side) muscles. To get a really hot midsection you’ll need to do different exercises so that you are targeting all these areas.

If you are really overweight it may be difficult to get down on the floor and work your abs. Not to worry, though, there are easy ab workouts that you can do standing up, you won’t lose any effectiveness but you will save a lot of wear and tear on your back and knees.

Here are some ideas of standing ab exercises that you can try today, just make sure you talk to your doctor first to make sure it’s ok:

1. The first standing ab exercise you can try is to stand with your feet shoulder width apart, raise your arms straight above your head, slowly lower your arms while simultaneously raising one of your knees, keep your leg and arms at a 90 degree angle, put that leg down while raising your arms back up and alternate the same thing with the other leg. Do at least 30 sets on each side.

2. Stand with your legs shoulder width apart, take a step forward with one leg, carefully lift the leg that is forward a few inches off the floor, slowly make circles using just your foot – try to keep the leg still and straight, make 20 circles in one direction then (using the same foot) circle 20 times in the other direction, than alternate with the other leg.

3. Stand with your legs shoulder width apart, hold a 10 to 20 pound dumbbell in each hand, slowly lean to one side keeping your legs straight – this move should only involve your obliques (side abdominal) muscles, after you’ve completed 20 reps on one side, do the other side.

It’s not that easy to learn how to do an exercise just by reading an article, but these standing abdominal exercises I’ve listed above will give you an idea of where to start. Just remember that even if you are very overweight, there are still abdominal exercises for obese people that can help you tone those all important ab muscles.

Talk to your doctor before you start any exercise plan and if possible find yourself a personal trainer so that they can watch you and make sure you are using the proper form, otherwise you may injure yourself and that will only slow down your weight loss efforts.

Funny how those few extra pounds seem to creep onto our bodies without notice. Then, one day, it’s almost as though they have all been added at once. Perhaps it a glance in the mirror, or worse, a comment from a friend you haven’ t seen in a while. Whatever it is, you are ready to lose weight. You want to look and feel better. At the same time, there’s so much conflicting information about the best way to lose weight. What’s a person to do?

What follows may not be at the top of everybody’s list for ways to lose weight quickly, but it works. At the very least it should be added to your bag of tricks for dropping those extra pounds. Some of the tips may sound a little silly, but you can’t argue with results. So, what is this method? Portion control. And it can actually be a lot fun!

For starters, when you focus on your portions, there’s no need to carry along a bulky calories counter guide when you go out to eat. I used to hate trying to be “casual” when using those, because I just knew all of the other diners were watching me; thinking to themselves how fat I was.

The most basic way of controlling your portions is…get ready…this is good…putting less on your plate. See? Easy. Not so fast! If it was that easy we would all be at our ideal weight. Yes, by all means, make an effort to put less on your plate. Here are a few more tricks to keep portions limited so you can lose extra weight.

Don’t worry about cleaning your plate. In fact, make it a habit to always leave a few bites on your plate. Speaking of your plate, using smaller dishes will give the illusion that there is more food on them. You can even eat on a saucer instead of a large dinner plate. Granted, you may have to fill it a second time, but all in all, it’s an easy way to limit the amount of food you’re eating.

A big problem for a lot of people is that they eat so fast that they are technically full long before they feel full. Slow down the speed with which you normally eat. Doing so will give your stomach more time to signal the brain that it’s full.

The beauty of doing it this way is that you can eat the same foods you enjoy now. You should still add more healthy foods, but you don’t have to give up any foods if you can keep the portion sizes under control. Once you get used to it, it’s as close to automatic weight loss as you can get. There are many other things you can do, too. Imagine looking good in the mirror, or being complimented by a friend the next time you see them.

The 12 day grapefruit diet is not a new concept. The original plan was developed in the 1930’s. This fruit appears to be a dieter’s dream. It has no fat, is high in fiber and low in calories. It also carries benefits for your skin as it is high in vitamin C.

So how does this diet work? It’s very simple. You eat half a grapefruit before every meal. The enzyme it contains reduces your appetite so you consume fewer calories. It also speeds up the fat burning process helping you to shed pounds. Everyone knows that if you use more energy than you take in from the food you eat, you will lose weight. Some studies suggest that you could lose up to ten pounds in less than two weeks simply by introducing this change. Personally, I believe you would have a better chance of success if you also cut your portion sizes, ate four or five smaller meals rather than three large ones. And took more exercise.

It is completely pointless thinking that one simple change in your lifestyle is going to result in a big weight loss. You need to review all areas of your life. Do you eat food because you are bored? Upset? Do you get enough exercise? Most Americans are not active enough. You don’t suddenly need to become a gym fanatic but a little extra activity every day will help. I am sure you can think of a million ways to add some movement to your sedentary lifestyle. You could take the stairs instead of the lift; get off the metro one stop early, walk to the store etc.

In the same way, you can make progress by implementing simple changes at mealtimes. Instead of frying your food which only adds extra calories, try grilling, baking or steaming. Learn how to cook rather than relying on prepackaged meals that add dollars to your bills as well as pounds to your waistline. Use herbs and spices to flavor your meals rather than salt to help prevent fluid retention.

Eat more fruit and vegetables. They are high in fiber, low in calories and very filling. Your skin will glow from all the extra vitamins and minerals you are consuming. Don’t eat carbohydrates after 5pm in the evening as your body will not have sufficient time to use up all the energy they release. The body converts excess energy into fat.

Eat protein but chose the leaner cuts of meat and forget about sausages and other processed foods for now. Don’t exclude all treats but go for quality rather than quantity. Stop eating when you are full and not when your plate is empty.

Don’t mistake being thirsty for feeling hungry. And stop ingesting hidden calories via flavored waters, fizzy pop and perhaps the biggest culprit of all, alcohol.

You can shrink your waistline by using the 12 day grapefruit diet. but only if you combine it with a healthy eating and exercise program.

A friend of ours wants to have an abdominoplasty procedure done. When she first told us about this, all we could do was look at each other. Afterwards, when we were by ourselves and were able to discuss it more, I made the comment that I thought she was nuts to want to have anything done.

Why? Because she weighs about 100 lbs soaking wet and works out like a fiend every single day. How could she possibly need to have a tummy tuck? Well, I was wrong to jump to any conclusion like that. She explained at a later date that even though she works out like a fiend, she is still getting older and the skin around her middle is starting to get saggy. It is because she works out so diligently that she wants to continue to look her best.

Can’t blame a woman for that now can you?

The procedure she will have is called a mini-tuck where an incision is made, minimal liposuction performed if any is needed, and the skin tightened, then stitched closed. The belly button does not require relocation with a mini-tuck. A drain tube is inserted into the incision to drain excess fluid. The lower abdomen is then wrapped with a compression dressing. Pain control using a prescribed narcotic or, if the pain is minimal, then over the counter pain relievers may be used. Recovery time is 2-3 weeks with a mini-tuck.

So, I learned my lesson. I learned that even someone who is in great shape and has incredible muscle tone can still be in need of firmer skin in certain areas of her body.

I have another friend who had an abdominoplasty procedure after having two pregnancies which resulted in two very big babies, 10 lbs and 11 lbs, respectively. She lost all the baby weight but since both the babies had to be taken Cesarean and were so big to begin with she ended up with a lot of excess skin in that area and she was told the muscles of her abdomen would never recover.

Obviously, the procedure she had done was a full tummy tuck which involved “baseball stitching” the damaged muscles, removing any fat remaining with liposuction, stretching the skin taut, trimming off the excess, relocating the belly button and closing the incision. Drain tubes were inserted to help keep fluid from accumulating and aid recovery. The area is then wrapped tightly with a compression dressing to help support the muscles. A narcotic analgesic will be prescribed to control the pain and discomfort associated with the procedure. Recovery time is approximately six weeks with a full tummy tuck.

So, if you are looking for a toned, flat belly, check out board-certified plastic surgeons in your area and call for a consult. Ask what your options are and if they think you are a good candidate for surgery. You may find that you are making one of the smartest decisions you have ever made in your life. Just think, no more battle of the bulge!

Although not recommended as a substitute for a weight loss or diet regimen, an abdominoplasty procedure can help correct the problem areas left behind when all is said and done.

Cruising has become a favorite vacation choice for millions of people around the world. Why shouldn’t cruising be popular? Leisurely floating through the Caribbean or Mediterranean while being entertained, fed unbelievable food and sipping tasty adult beverages with little umbrellas doesn’t sound too bad, does it? Yes, cruising can be very expensive — but it doesn’t have to be. Here are some money saving tips to consider when you are planning your next cruise vacation.

1. Choose the right time of year

Caribbean cruises are normally less expensive in the fall and spring than they are in the winter or summer. Although the Caribbean gets hot in the summer there are also fewer ships which make the prices go up. Winter is the peak season and therefore the most expensive.

During fall and spring, however, there are many ships in the Caribbean but the prices are lower. Why? Because the weather is a bigger factor. So if you don’t mind gambling a bit on the weather, fall and spring are the cheapest times to cruise.

2. Select an older ship

As the cruise lines build bigger and better ships, the older ships in fleet often are available on popular itineraries at cheaper prices. Many of these older ships are reassigned to smaller ports. You may be able to book a cruise on a ship that leaves from a port within driving distance of your home — which will save you the price of airfare.

3. Watch out for expensive excursions

When you get into port, the cruise line will offer many excursions. While it is great to have a ship sponsored excursion, these are often two to three times more expensive than booking your own excursions.

Of course you have to be careful to choose a reputable company when booking excursions, but these are not difficult to find online. Find a company that has lots of references and has a written policy on refunds. Generally it’s better not to travel long distances with a local excursion company because if you are late getting back to the ship you will be left on the dock.

While caution is necessary, booking your own excursions can save a family of four as much as $200 or $300 in each port!

4. Stick to a budget on the ship.

When you are cruising you are not allowed to use cash on the ship. Everything you purchase is signed for — then, at the end of the cruise, you are presented with a final bill. With this arrangement it is easy to overspend.

Watch your budget. Remember that alcoholic drinks are expensive. If you are a gambler you will probably find much better odds on the mainland. Premium restaurants on board are fine, but do you really want to pop $20 or $30 extra when the main dining room has wonderful fare that is also included in the price of your cruise?

If you are planning a cruise soon these money saving tips will help you have a great vacation while still coming in on budget!

It doesn’t matter if you are traveling by plane, train or automobile, any parent will have some level of anxiety when they are planning a vacation with their kids. Regardless of the age of your kids, you have to take on a certain level of planning in order to make any trip or vacation run smoothly. Whenever you are planning your next road trip or family vacation, there are a few things that you can remember to hopefully make your travel much easier and stress free.

If you are going to be traveling with younger kids, you may want to start talking with them about the trip well in advance. Sometimes, it is a good idea to explain the vacation and the method of travel so that you can get some of their questions out of the way early. You may also find that you have a child that will need to feel comfortable with whatever mode of travel you will be taking for your vacation. While it can be exciting to travel on a boat, plane or train, there are bound to be plenty of questions along the way.

No matter how you are going to be traveling, it is always important to pack things to snack on. If you are going to be waiting in the airport or train station, you can save money by bringing along a few favorite snacks. Otherwise, you will more than likely have to buy something pricey at a commissary or food court if you have a wait before you depart. Quick, mess free snacks such as trail mix, nuts or carrot sticks will keep a child from getting hungry during the wait.

If you are going to be traveling by automobile or RV, you need to make sure that you fill a bag with different games and things to keep them occupied during the trip. Board games, note pads and even their favorite handheld electronics can make for many quiet hours on road trips. However, if you want to have interaction as a family, you can also think of getting a book of road trip games that you can get involved with as a group. Pick the oldest child to read off a few games that you can all play to pass the time while on the road.

Certainly, it is important to pack appropriately when you are going to be traveling with kids. If you are going to be on a plane or a train for a few hours, think of having them pack their favorite small blanket, stuffed animal or pillow to cuddle up with. While a blanket or pillow may be offered on the flight, there is something comforting about being able to use their favorite things from home. You may even end up having a child that sleeps through the entire trip because they are so comfortable.

No matter how you slice it, things will come up when you travel with kids. You simply just have to try to be as prepared as possible so that you can deal with whatever comes your way. In the end, you are going to have a great road trip or vacation that you will all remember for a lifetime.

Everybody loves to travel! But there are a couple of excuses that people always have when talking about vacation, time and money. Today we will discuss why time and money shouldn’t be an excuse for you not to travel anymore.

Traveling the world is one of the best ways that you can gain a good perspective of other cultures as well as enjoy the planet that we live on. However in some cultures travel and vacationing is not part of their society. This is the case for most of the western world. We always seem to be too busy to get away.

But did you know that traveling can be inexpensive, fun and rejuvenating? It’s true! There are even some companies that are now giving their employees trips because they understand that when an employee is rested they work more efficiently. But not all company feel that way, the truth is most companies want you to work more and pay you less.

If you are young, it is a good idea to go traveling and stay in youth hostels. They are inexpensive to stay in and allow you to see the world without spending much money. Plus you may meet lots of friends who are also doing the same as you. However with youth hostels you should exercise caution because of safety. If you stay in groups you’ll most likely be fine.

Another inexpensive way to travel is to book your airfare in advance by six months or more. This will give you the best pricing especially if you are going to be traveling during holidays times such as summer, Thanksgiving or Christmas time.

If you have a frequent flyer card then you should use it to save on airfare. You might be able to even score a free ticket or two depending on how often you travel. With so many frequent flyer clubs out there, it is best to look into them and do your own research. Some frequent flyer clubs are geared toward business people while others are geared toward the average family. You just need to do some research to find out which ones will work best for you.

Speaking of frequent flyer clubs, one way to enjoy your trip is to hang out in the airport lounges. These are lounges that are exclusively designed for airline cardmembers. They often require a yearly fee, however they can be relaxing and rejuvenating in the hectic airport. It’s up to you to decide if it’s worth the money or not.

Finally, let’s talk about time. Getting time off to travel can sometimes be difficult. However if you approach your boss with a proposition that your travel might help your work, it is more likely that you’ll be able to get the time off. For example let’s say you are a teacher, you might look for educational opportunities while traveling and report back to your boss what you learned.

These are just a few examples of ways that you can leverage your time and money to travel more and see the world. Just go out there and do it and experience new and exciting cultures!

from WordPress http://bit.ly/2TdO4ub

The ever increasing number of people who today have access to airline travel has put the great cities of the world within reach of more people than ever before. The increasing number of low cost airlines mean that competition is driving down prices and great deals place less of a strain on the pocketbook than has ever been the case.

If you’re going to make use of a low cost airline or one of the many ultra cheap specials that are available you’re probably not going to get a great meal or free flowing drinks on demand, but the positive is that you’ll be able to get to your destination with enough cash on hand to really treat yourself.

If you want to expand your horizons which cities would make the best destination for someone who is new to the idea of intercontinental travel? That would all depend on the individual. If your interests are in exploring different cultures out of the mainstream then more exotic destinations should be in the itinerary.

Places like capital cities in Africa and Asia offer great bases for exploring the regional cultures, sights and sounds of the the less well known destinations. Try Mombasa, or even Bangkok and get your bearings, before setting off into the sunset away from the busy tourist spots.

For those who want to immerse themselves in something different and leave these capital cities behind there is probably no better way to get to know the locals than using public transportation. Sitting in a bus will give you a unique perspective on what makes a country tick.

By doing this you will expose yourself to the same foods and pastimes that are enjoyed by the locals. It’s easy enough to check yourself into a resort, but by getting to know ordinary people you’re going to make memories that will last a lifetime.

You’ll be surprised how friendly locals can be when they see that you are willing to share a bit of discomfort to get to your destinations. It is not unusual to be invited to share a meal or a cold drink. If you really want to make a good impression then learn a few simple phrases in local dialects, your pronunciation may not always be great, but its certainly an ice breaker.

Travel is a great way to expand the mind and broaden your horizons, but remember to take a few common sense precautions. By doing some simple preparation you can make your journey that much more enjoyable. Simple things like carrying some medication to treat an upset stomach, or even simple sticking plaster can make the difference between a miserable time, and fabulous memories that will be with you for the rest of your life.

For those with a thirst for adventure now is the best time to shrug off the worries of home and take to the path less traveled. You’ll regret not seizing the opportunity to expand your mind and build a library of new experiences.

With so much to do and so many places to visit in Las Vegas you will be so busy you may forget to eat. However, Vegas has a restaurant for every culture you can think of and thousands of restaurants and food outlets available. This means that you will never even see or hear of over 90% of them, and you could be missing out on some real gems. Most of the hotels serve cuisine in relation to what the theme of the hotel is, so if you like Italian you can go and visit the Venetian, but sticking solely to the large casino hotels for your food will prove to be an expensive business, there are a lot better value places around Las Vegas.

Monta

For those people who love Japanese food then you will not go wrong here. Situated on Mountain Road, food can start at $7 here. There is not a great selection but the food that they do serve is fabulous, and nearly all reviews are positive. A lot of people recommend the char sui as well as the pork bone broth which is their specialty.

Asian Buffet

Located on Sahara, this establishment serves up a lot of Asian food, Japanese, Thai, Malay, Filipino and a host of others. The food is always fresh and hot with a wide selection. The place is usually always buzzing despite the fact that it has many seats, so some days you may have to wait, but the trays of food never run empty. The buffet prices start at around $8 but it is dependent on what day and time you go, with nighttime at weekends being the most expensive.

The Steakhouse

This is in the Circus Circus Hotel which is not that well-known for food, and yet this is a wonderful place with succulent steaks on offer. It is also extremely well priced due to it not being a top end hotel, but the quality of the food is no different than the more expensive steakhouses. Steaks will only set you back between $10 to $15 and the wine is very well priced.

Estiatorio Milos

Not everyone loves seafood but for those that do then you are in for a real treat here. It is not cheap, but considering the place is in a city in the middle of the desert the food is so fresh. You can get a decent enough three course lunch for just over $20. Recommended in reviews is the tuna burger, crab cake and fresh lobster. This one is located inside the Cosmopolitan Hotel.

Settebello

If you enjoy pizza then you will definitely like this place. All pizzas are handmade from the flour up, and you can taste the flavors of the passion the staff put into them. Find it on Green Valley Parkway.

Although some people only spend a few days in Las Vegas it is always worth visiting one or two restaurants off the beaten track as you may be surprised at the food you can get.

from WordPress http://bit.ly/2Fa2jLG

Las Vegas is one of those places that everyone should visit before they die. There is so much to do, not only in Vegas itself but also the surrounding area. Everyone who visits usually stays in one of the casino hotels, so that side of the city is unavoidable, but there are a number of hidden gems that most visitors miss. With so much competition in this city you can find a lot of bargains when looking for somewhere to stay, with some of the hotel casinos only charging around $20 a night. Although the list of things to do in Las Vegas can go into the hundreds, below you will find some of the best ones.

Red Rock Canyon

If you have hired a car then Red Rock Canyon is only about a 30 minute drive outside Las Vegas, otherwise ask your hotel to arrange a trip for you. The scenery in this canyon is amazing, and the rock colors cover shades from yellow to red, and black to light gray, making a great contrast on a day with clear blue skies. There are many walks in this area, but make sure you take some food and water, especially if it is mid-afternoon. Be prepared to spend at least half a day, although the location is so beautiful and peaceful you may wish to spend the whole day there.

Enjoy A Gondola At The Venetian

Regardless of where you are staying in Las Vegas you must visit the Venetian. The inside is amazing and they have constructed the shops and canals as they are in Venice, it is a great place for those romantic moments.

The Bellagio Fountains

These are well-known through the world and are impressive enough during the daytime, but for that extra bit of beauty then make sure you see them at night when they are lit up in various colors. You will be completely mesmerized by this fountain show.

Hoover Dam

There are a lot of trips going to the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead so ask at the hotel reception and they will arrange it for you. This structure is an amazing piece of human engineering, and standing on it looking down towards the bottom is quite staggering and may even make you feel a little queasy. Lake Mead is also an interesting place, and is a massive man-made lake.

Stratosphere

This hotel has been around for a while but for the ultimate photo shots of Vegas you have to go to the top of the tower, it also has a fantastic restaurant, but for that little bit of strange, it has some rides available, one of which tips you over the edge of the tower. Then there is the new Stratosphere SkyJump which means you can jump off the tower and fall towards The Strip in a controlled decent, and that has to be one of the most exhilarating experiences you will ever have in your life.

One of my favorite places on earth is Cozumel, a small island off the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico.

Cozumel is a friendly little island with a slow and relaxing pace.

Cozumel is a major cruise ship destination and during the winter cruise season it’s not unusual to count six or seven cruise ships in port on any given day of the week. Even so, unless you are in downtown San Miguel, the island never feels crowded.

The 2nd largest natural reef in the world runs along the Yucatan Peninsula close by to Cozumel. You can take a boat ride out and visit this beautiful reef. Glass bottom boats offer a bird’s eye view of wild splashes of beautiful colored coral — and oh, those exotic and breathtaking fish!

The most popular place to spend the day in Cozumel is also one of my favorite places: Chankanaab National Park. The park is just a short cab ride (about ten minutes) from the cruise terminals. Chankannab, meaning “little sea” in the Mayan language, is home to a beautiful Lagoon that has the only inland coral reef formation anywhere in the entire world.

Once you are in the park there is lots to do. You can:

Take a swim with dolphins, sea lions and manatees.

For our kids this was an unforgettable experience of a lifetime!

You can go Seaktrekking or Snuba diving. Even better than snorkeling, Seaktrekking and Snuba diving let you explore all of the beautiful underwater treasures found in the park.

You can go snorkeling:

Get up close and personal with the beautiful interior reef. You can rent all your gear in the park. Don’t forget to pack an underwater camera — you will treasure pictures of your kids feeding the beautiful fish in the lagoon.

Cabs are available regularly to and from the park and the cab fares are preset and very reasonable. So you don’t have to worry about transportation when you are going to Chankanaab.

Where can you eat in Cozumel? You will have no problem there! You can enjoy a typical Mexican taco breakfast with your family in any one of several locally owned restaurants. For a romantic dinner, try eating by candlelight at one of the beautiful open air cafes that look out over the beautiful blue Caribbean.

If you are adventuresome you might try some of the unique Mayan cuisine that has been prepared by local restaurant operators who are actual Mayan descendants.

We love to rent a jeep for the day when we are on Cozumel. There is only one major road on the island, and of course it takes you around the perimeter of the island — the whole island is only about 30 miles long and 9 miles wide.

A word of warning: renting motor bikes can be great fun, too, but there seems to be an inordinate number of motor bike accidents on Cozumel. This is probably due to the condition of some of the roads in the exterior — and a lack of experience on behalf of the riders.

Well, there is my recommendation for a wonderful winter getaway. Cozumel is a great place to visit and one of my favorite places on earth.

Japan has always been a tourist magnet: it offers modern world conveniences while harking back to traditional times. However, one thing many people do not take into consideration when deciding they want to travel to Japan is the cost. As one of the most expensive countries in the world, it behooves the savvy traveler to plan in advance and budget, budget, budget.

1. The flight. Unless you’re taking a ferry from South Korea or China, you will probably be flying into one of Japan’s airports. If you’re coming from Europe or North America, then prepare for the large cost. Last minute round trip tickets from the USA to Japan can cost as much as $3000 for coach. If you plan ahead months in advance, you can change that to less than $1000. Either way, prepare to budget most of your money just for the cost of getting there and back.

2. Accommodation. Hotels are also expensive, whether you go for Western style or the traditional ryokan style. It’s not uncommon to pay over $100 a night in the cities even for mediocre rooms. If you’re traveling by yourself or with another adult, think about staying in one of Japan’s many hostels, which run as low as $15 a night. You will meet great people from around the world while getting right into the culture. For extended stays, try renting a room from a guesthouse.

3. Food. Admit it, you’re going to Japan partially for the food. If you’re in the city, however, you’re going to be swamped with the usual Western fast food chains. The costs are about the same as in the West. But if you do find an authentic Japanese restaurant, be prepared to still pay about $5 per meal per person. No one said getting yakisoba was cheap in Japan.

4. Transportation. While many things will be available by foot if you’re staying in a city, the best way to get around Japan is still by train. Many tickets are pretty cheap, but the costs can add up. If you’re staying for a long while, consider getting a JR Rail Pass. These can be had for one, two, or three week intervals. This is perfect if you plan on traveling between cities in Japan as well.

5. Attractions. There’s very little to do in Japan for free. Museums and landmarks often cost a small admission, and going shopping can really rack up a bill. Plan out what you want to do ahead of time and research admission costs online. This way you can budget it into your schedule without having a heart attack at the gate.

Visiting Japan is a life altering experience. If you travel there, you are sure to have a wonderful time, indulge in a fantastic culture, and meet all sorts of neat people, both foreign and Japanese. In order to maximize your enjoyment, it’s important to plan ahead and budget accordingly. The more money you save, the bigger the adventure you can have!

Whether you’re about to go to your first convention or your twenty-first convention, it’s important that you make sure you’re ready. I’ve assembled a list of tips that’ll help you survive travelling to a convention. This advice will work whether you’re going to ComicCon or a small convention near you.

If you’re planning on wearing a costume like most convention goers, it’s important that you pack a costume repair kit with you! Costumes are notorious for ripping or breaking at the absolute worst times. So it’s important that you have what you’ll need to do minor repairs. Now you don’t need to bring an entire workshop with you, but you should have the basics to fix small problems. A sewing kit, scissors, and some super glue should be the absolute minimum you pack with you!

If your costume requires a prop weapon, make sure you check the convention’s policies on weapons ahead of time. Most of them have bans on live steal and projectile weapons at the very least, and some are very strict on what they allow. So before you lug a prop weapon across the country or state, check and make sure you’re allowed to have it with you!

Remember to drink lots of water during the convention! Most conventions are three full days and you can be running non-stop. It’s really easy to get caught up in everything and forget to drink water. This is the worst mistake you can make. It’s very easy to get dehydrated since most conventions tend to be hot from the number of people walking around. The last thing you want is to have to be rushed to the hospital because you passed out.

Just like it’s important to drink water, it’s also important for you to eat at the very least, one meal each day. This doesn’t mean eat a small bowl of ramen noodles and an energy bar. This means sit down, get yourself a nice meal, and replenish the nutrients your body needs!

Just as it’s important to refuel your body every day, it’s also important to clean your body every day. Whether you’re going to a convention that has 500 people or one that has 22,000 people, there’s going to be a lot of people in one small area. You don’t want to stand next to someone that smells like they haven’t bathed in a week. And no one is going to want to stand next to you if you smell like that either.

You also need to make sure you’re getting plenty of sleep each night. While it may sound like fun to drink energy drinks and stay up all night, trust me, it’s not worth it. Your body will hate you at the end of the convention and you’ll regret not getting a couple hours of sleep.

Traveling to your first convention can be pretty scary. But if you take a deep breath and remember everything here, you’ll have a great time. Going to conventions is a lot of fun, so try not to stress too hard!

This past February, I climbed to the highest point in Panama. This peak is found at 11,398 feet above sea level atop a dormant volcano called Volcan Baru. It was the most grueling and challenging thing I have ever done in my life. It taxed every once of my body and mind. I don’t know that I will ever do it again, but I am definitely glad that I did it. It is possibly a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

A group of about 20 of us set out around 5AM from Rio Sereno, a small town on the Costa Rican border. My husband and I ate a hearty breakfast of eggs, toast, oatmeal, and coffee since we knew that was the last full meal we would have for at least 38 hours.

I made the mistake of drinking a big glass of water right before we left knowing that our water would also be rationed during this time. I suppose drinking the water wasn’t really the mistake; not going to the bathroom right before I left was. As you can guess, I had to go to the bathroom so badly that we had to stop the van so I could get out. Fortunately, there was not much oncoming traffic, it was still before sunrise, and I found a tree to go behind. That was not the way I wanted to start out this trip.

After a last-minute stop at Romero’s (the only nice grocery store for miles around), we finally made it to the drop-off point, where we started the long descent up the volcano. The first hour was a pleasant one through a beautiful green forest of large trees and strange-growing mushrooms. Then, the terrain changed into more of a hands-on climbing up the trail. It was extremely dusty at one point and we all got very dirty.

One of the hardest terrain types to climb were the white lightning rocks. (That is just what I call them. It is hard to describe them. They act sort of like a quick sand that your feet get buried in, but it is composed of baseball and softball sized rocks.) Actually, these were worse coming down the mountain, although my husband rather enjoyed “skating” down them. I was afraid I would break something.

We finally made it to the base camp around 4:30 PM. We brought tents and sleeping bags to sleep in in the crater of the volcano. It was very windy and very cold. We built a fire and sat around it singing and telling stories as we drank hot chocolate. My husband and I slept for a little while, but soon we were shivering ourselves awake, so we got up and sat around the fire.

Early the next morning, we made the final climb to the very top of Panama, where you can see the Pacific on one side and the Atlantic on the other. It felt pretty amazing to have accomplished that- to be on top of the Panamanian world.

Why would anyone in their right minds want to travel to Chicago U.S.A.? What does the city and Chicago tourism have to offer? Unless you want to fly a kite in what is known as the “Windy City”… why would you want to go there? Do they have any famous theme parks, world class ski destinations, or interesting historical excursions? What is so great about visiting Chicago?

The answer to those questions are all contained in the words “The Chicago Blackhawks”. Chicago tourism should realize that the hockey team known as the Chicago Blackhawks is the only reason for anyone to travel to such a destination. The team has such a rich history in the sport of hockey and recently they have been playing like the true champions that their history requires.

Yes, they are on top of their game. With a recent Stanley Cup to show for their efforts and a first place lead this year… they are an exciting young team to follow. However, things have not always been so positive for the team. They have had many years of disappointment and lack-luster efforts.

One of the benefits of having poor performance years in a row is that you are eligible to receive high draft picks. Not all teams however, have the ability to turn those high picks into quality players. Not so with the Chicago Blackhawks. Many sub par years produced excellent prospects that have turned out to be top-notch, skilled players. This my friend, is one of the secrets to success in the National Hockey League.

True, there are other successful teams that have gone this route. Pittsburgh Penguins are such a team. There are however, many teams that just keep struggling and performing bad only to draft their picks also very poorly. The Calgary Flames are a recent example. They continue to disappoint their fans with uninspired and sloppy play.

Chicago does have a history of other successful sporting teams. The Chicago Bears and the Chicago Bulls both have had their glory days. The Chicago Cubs on the other hand have been a disappointment for decades. Their fans continue to hope and wait and hope and wait. The Cubs team in Chicago though, is the exception rather than the rule.

You may find it strange that someone would only want to visit a city because of a hockey team. But is that really so abnormal? Many sporting fans from many countries are enamored with only just that. They save their hard earned dollars so as to take a vacation following their favorite team. It allows them to spend some time away from the pressures and anxieties of their everyday mundane existence.

So if I were to visit a website for Chicago Tourism would I find as an attraction, tickets to the Chicago Blackhawk’s games. If it was available, then I would surly purchase those tickets and I would pack my bags and take a trip to the “Windy City”. Not to be cruel but, besides that… what else does the city really have to offer?

Baby boomers love to travel. Even with some pundits saying that the Baby Boomer generation isn’t prepared for their retirement, isn’t saving enough, is having to work longer than expected, and many other somewhat depressing headlines, in January of this year, the U.S. Travel Association reported that Boomers make up thirty-six percent of all leisure travelers and thirty-eight percent of all business travelers every year. So it would appear that the Baby Boomers still manage to finance their travel even if they may not be able to finance their eventual retirement.

Anytime a group of Baby Boomers get together, the conversation inevitably turns to travel – who’s been where lately, which cruise line has the best buffet, and where the best golf course are. There are even conversations about zip lining and skydiving and where to rent or buy the latest in scuba gear. If there is a favorite travel pastime among the Baby Boomer travel set, it is probably cruising. They love taking the scenic tours to the Panama Canal, the Mediterranean, Italy and Greece. Even Alaska and whale watching are extremely popular with these intrepid travelers.

Baby Boomers seem to just have a passion for the exotic when it comes to traveling, with almost sixty percent of all Boomers having their passport waiting and ready so they can leave at a moment’s notice. There are seven current trends in Boomer travel that are pretty popular right now:

• Eco-tourism – these green trips are targeted to Baby Boomers with a love for the environment. These trips include hiking, bird watching, nature walks, observing waterfalls, and whale watching and counting. Many Baby Boomers care about world sustainability and protecting the environment and endangered species. By 2020, more than 1.6 billion trips are predicted to take place by the UN World Tourism Organization.

• Adventure Travel – this category of travel is quickly growing and is predicted to continue this scale of growth for the foreseeable future. Adventure travel includes sky diving, snorkeling, cycling, skiing, hiking, and scuba diving. The feeling behind the rise in Baby Boomer activity in this travel category is that Baby Boomers have spent their lifetime watching others participate in these activities and now they want their turn.

• Religion – Baby Boomers travel extensively for religious reasons each year. Over 900,000 visit destinations with holy significance all over the world including the Holy Land, Israel, Egypt, Turkey, Italy, France, and Portugal. Almost 90% of these Baby Boomer travelers are Christians.

• Culinary Cruises – Baby Boomers not only love to cruise, they love to eat and drink while they’re cruising. This is a growing market which started with five years ago and now is provided by many cruise lines.

• Destination Weddings – Baby Boomers are getting remarried or married for the first time and like to do it in exotic places with spectacular venues.

• Multi-Generational or Family Trips – Baby Boomers aren’t very different from other generations of grandparents, they love their grandkids and enjoy traveling with them. These trips are most often arranged around family milestones such as a birthday, a graduation or anniversary. The difference between today’s Boomer grandparents and those of previous generations is that today the trip is more likely to be to Europe than to Disneyworld, because the Baby Boomer grandparents are veteran travelers themselves.

• Medical Tourism – Baby Boomers are more than willing to travel to find the healthcare they need, especially cosmetic surgery and some of the surgeries which are more expensive in the United States such as organ transplants.

Baby Boomer travel is a significant part of the United States and the international travel industry and as more and more Baby Boomers retire from their working lives, this number will continue to grow.
